Did you get the window contact and glass detector on all windows? We just did it for the egress window. Our rep said that if they come through a window on the first floor the motion detectors will pick them up. We added a key pad upstairs, but we went with basic package for everything else.
You can get a router cheaper, way cheaper than what they're charging
We didn't get any audio system. Honestly between the computer, the music channels through cable/satellite provider, mp3, players, and our phones, we have plenty of access to music. Regarding the intercom feature, we just thought yelling from upstairs to down stairs and vice versa works just fine.
We also didn't pre-wire for anything. If we would have a finished basement we would, but our rep said when we finish it he can come in and do pre wire on the full installation.
@2011 - regarding the window contact and glass detector, I am not sure about all windows; but that is great advice. I will ask my husband about it. I agree with you regarding the audio system; however, my husband prefers to have it...I can do without it. We are finishing our basement...all but the media room, which we plan to do later.
Wow, you guys got a lot of stuff there. It does add up to more money than you think it's going to be. I remember looking at the bottom line and being a bit shocked.
We got the window contacts on our three big basement windows, with pet contacts (i.e. the windows can be opened around 8-9" for the pets, but the alarm can still be set (double contacts make this possible), since the cats stay in the finished basement.
We did not get detectors on any other windows, just the basement door, morning room door, front door and garage doors. The motion detectors are supposed to detect anyone getting in through any other window on the first floor.
I'm pretty sure that Ryan will not let any other contractor work inside the unfinished home. It's Guardian or no one in their view. While the home is being built and still owned by them, they only allow their authorized contractors to work inside the home no matter what the topic is, electrical, flooring, painting, etc. etc.
I know when we had our meeting we talked pricing but the only thing they could "negotiate" on was up to 6 months of free monitoring. I did post some prices for some things in my blog. Most things have two prices....their's where they supply everything, and their's where they prewire and/or you supply something.
If you want wiring done prior to closing you have to use guardian. Since Ryan still owns the home during construction they limit the contractors who are allowed to do work.
The home network is the easiest thing to drop and do yourself. Wireless technology has come so far that you don't need wired outlets. Most internet providers will set up a home network for you as part of your installation and setup visit without additional charge. If you want equipment and a network separate from your provider you can still do that very easily for just a couple hundred dollars from best buy and an hour of your time.
Thanks everyone for your advice. Our follow-up meeting with Guardian is on the 18th and we want to finalize all of the details at that time so we can move on to the next thing on the "to do" list.
