Irrigation System and On-going Landscaping

Within the past month or so we received bids from 3 landscaping companies.  Finally, we have selected a company to assist us with our irrigation system and on-going landscaping needs.  Initially we plan to install the irrigation system right after closing and the rest will have to wait until Spring.  We have a 3-5 year plan that includes additional landscaping (mulch beds, plants, shrubs, retaining walls, etc.), outdoor living area (patio, grill, etc), swimming pool, and play area for the kids.

Gumpf Gardens is able to satisfy all of our needs.  One of the things that attracts us to working with this company is that it is a family owned (2nd generation) business that has serviced the local area since 1957.  We work directly with Jim (founder's son and current owner) who is a registered landscape architect and has many years of experience in designing and building garden centers.

Great news! I was told that my yard consisted of 4 zones and will cost about 6k but online the sample quotes range from $400 - $700 per zone so I am scratching my head right now.

Very nice! I prefer to work with people/companies that are local, been around a while, have a good rep, and give you one-on-one personal service. Nice choice! And you're getting pool!!!??? SUPER NICE!!

Carlito: I'd be asking how you jump from $700 to $6000. I'm not sure I'd trust ANYONE who gave me a price hike like that without explaining exactly why it jumped so much. GL!

HW: Good luck at closing! =)

Our irrigation system will basically be me standing in the yard with a hose. For landscaping, I'll swap the hose for a shovel and get the wife to pitch in with a wheelbarrow.

That's really cool.

PS - I Love Noey's reaction to the word POOL. Reference her other posts about this as well. LOL.

@Carlito - your online sample quotes are about right. The industry standard is about $100 per head and you can typically count on 5 or 6 heads per zone. 4 zones seems like not that much unless you are only doing the yard. Our very rough estimate is at least 12 zones and maybe even 13.

@HW - we are in the process of trying to eliminate the entire landscaping package and doing it ourself. As we told our sales rep and PM we would really hate to have them install 30 shrubs with us not really caring for the large majority of them and turning around and ripping them all out to install our own design which also includes sprinkler system and landscape lighting...plus RH design has NO trees at all and we are planning to install 3 or 4 to start. This time of year is usually perfect to get everything going...we will see.

The irrigation system that we are going with is the Hunter Pro-C (http://www.hunterindustries.com/). We decided not to add the system to the mulch beds close to the house; so we will only have 8 zones, with approx. 61 heads.

@BD - we didn't want any of RH's landscaping; however, they would not budge. We would not be able to close without the landscaping being done. We will keep some of it and move some of it; however, as for the hydro seed, that was probably the biggest waste. We will probably end up reseeding after the system is installed.

@Noey - regarding the pool, until we sell our current house, we won't be getting the pool any time soon. Also, we want to wait a few years so the kids are a little bit older. However, we needed to take the pool into consideration while we designed the irrigation system so we don't end up loosing $$$ later.

Will give you an update on the landscaping issue as soon as we get a final resolution...it will make us sick if we have to trash 30 shrubs...what a waste...I wish we were getting hydroseed...our's is more like, seed, weed, and hay...you have to stand on top of it to find the actual grass...
